The Best Advice
When I was in sales, I was drawn to those who were successful. I wanted what they had, so I needed to do what they did in order to have the same kind of success. A previous Sales Manager once started a success story with the words "This one thing I did...” I remember being ready to hear the secret. I was ready to take notes because this advice was coming from someone I esteemed as worthy. Credibility is everything.
I can only imagine the church at Philippi reading this circulated letter that would be the book of Philippians in our Bible today. Paul was a hero to them. He had credibility. He knew what it meant to suffer and keep going (II Corinthians 11:23-30).
As they are reading through the letter, they get to the part of the scroll that is Philippians 3:13-14 for us today. "Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but his one thing I do,” Let’s stop there for a moment. The great apostle Paul has just told the saints at Philippi "This one thing I do". This was a notetaking moment. He had their attention and then delivered the best advice ever.
Paul goes on to say, "This one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus."
I imagine Paul's audience is much like mine. There were people who had failed and couldn't move past their failure. There were also those who couldn't get past their own successes. Regardless, it's as true today as it was then. Forgetting involves the mind and reaching forth involves action and energy. We focus our action and energy towards what lies before.
That may sound simplistic, but it is so true. What's in front of us has to be bigger than what is behind us. In this case Paul says "I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus". That is the ultimate goal.
What are you reaching for? What is holding you back? Take Paul's advice and move towards what lies before and stop letting those things that are past keep you from doing so. That is the best advice.
