“Great is Thy Faithfulness”

In Lamentations 3:22 – 24, the prophet Jeremiah writes under the influence of the Holy Spirit: “It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. (23) They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. (24) The LORD is my portion, saith my soul, therefore will I hope in him.”

When Jeremiah penned these words, he was heartbroken. The city of Jerusalem was in shambles. Nebuchadnezzar and his armies had destroyed the city, the temple, and the remnant had been carried away captive. Yet, in the midst of uncertainty and great sorrow, we see in these verses the LORD’S mercy, compassion and faithfulness.

For the child of God, we can take comfort from these Scriptures (Romans 15:8). We see the care of God, his mercy, compassion, and faithfulness for those that are His. While in these days of uncertainty, sorrow and many difficulties, remember that the LORD will be merciful, compassionate, and faithful to you through His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ: “Who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3b).

May we not place our hope and confidence in the things of this world, but may our hope and confidence be in the Lord, for great is His faithfulness!

GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS

By Thomas Chisholm

Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father;

There is no shadow of turning with Thee;

Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not;

As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be.

REFRAIN

Great is Thy faithfulness!

Great is Thy faithfulness!

Morning by morning new mercies I see.

All I have needed Thy hand hath provided;

Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,

Sun, moon and stars in their courses above

Join with all nature in manifold witness

To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

REFRAIN

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth

Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;

Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,

Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!
